Twilight Project - update

The twilight project part 1 has been shot, we had an afternoon of set design and building on location at our allotment. Kate and I have teamed up for this project, we have a 3 photo series in mind, hopefully we can get parts 2 & 3 shot but the weather isn't helping at the moment!

Here are the reference images I used for my idea from Gregory Crewdson's Beneath the roses series.

Catch up time!

It's been a hectic few months with the photo group - f11. We've been on a field trip to Shell island in wales and put on our first exhibition with 1 weeks notice! It was a storming show with the 1AM finishes paying off!
Last night we had our regular meeting which had loads of new faces, thanks to everyone that came along - both old and new!

The new project for this month is "twilight hours". Got a few initial ideas but nothing concrete yet, at least I will have to plan this one alittle more, I can't really do it the same day of the next meeting (11/8/09). Find below a bit of research I have found.

Feeling quite poorly at the mo, hope I haven't got swine flu!

Cheers!

"Silence"

This months project for the fishbone photo arts group was silence. My idea came from TV/radio. Media creates a continual amount of sound/chatter in our everyday life. My inspiration came from looking up at the skyline in the city centre and seeing a vast array of aerials and transmitter dishes, this got me thinking about the whole process of electronic communications. I thought about the actual machinery/electronics/technology - these components and circuits that convey all these sounds are silent, when was the last time a resistor came up and shouted at you? ;->

My idea developed towards what would happen in the radio/tv studio that creates all this media without humans? The technology is still quietly sat there but there isn't a flesh and blood presenter to communicate to the masses.

These ideas linked to the end of term at the university, which unlike what most students think, are manned by us mere technicians all summer long. The hustle and bustle of students has passed and the corridors and rooms are left empty and untrodden. I decided to document the radio studios as I found them, lit with a few dim halogen spot lights in a silent acoustically sealed space, you feel isolated from the real world outside.

I started with a few close up shots and then developed the idea to try to show the emptiness and convey the silence. The feedback from the group was very constructive and I am now on the look out to find a third image to join these two.

Interiors project

I managed to grab 10 minutes this morning to shoot a few images for the FISHPHARTs (now f11) interiors project. I have been struggling to access the space as we are in the midst of degree show madness at the uni, as you can see there is a stage setup in the dome space. Ideally I would want to shoot with an empty space and use some flash against the walls but it wasn't possible with the stage in place so I concentrated on lighting the dome. I used a combination of 3 nikon speed lights, two off board on remote and one onboard as a master. This was useful to control the flashes without running over to them every time an adjustment was needed. Here's a sample of the images, your comments are welcome.

Jonathan Worth photos in National Portrait Gallery

Jonathan Worth, a lecturer I work with at Coventry University, currently has his work exhibited in the NPG. I helped interview him today for the ITV central news who are doing a story on him. He's a great guy to work with and an excellent photographer who has worked all over the world and deserves the recognition. Check out the work in the NPG here. Well done mate!

You may recognise that the guy in the photo is Alan Moore who penned graphic novels such as V for vendetta, Watchmen, Sin City and many more!
